About

Scott Hughes Architects

Scott Hughes Architects designs refined modern residences shaped by light, landscape, and structure. The firm’s work is grounded in a disciplined approach to site and material, creating architecture that is quiet, precise, and enduring. With projects across coastal and landscape-driven environments, the practice is known for homes that balance openness and shelter, simplicity and warmth, and clarity with restraint. Each project reflects a careful response to place and the belief that architecture should feel both contemporary and timeless.

Founded by Scott Hughes, AIA, the practice builds on more than three decades of experience designing high-end residential architecture across coastal and landscape-driven settings. While the firm maintains a strong presence in South Florida, its work extends nationally, with projects in diverse environments including waterfront, desert, mountain, and rural landscapes.

Each project begins with a careful study of site, climate, and program. The architecture emerges from these conditions rather than from a predetermined style. The result is a body of work that is consistent in its sensibility, disciplined, calm, and precise, while varied in its expression.

Hughes’ background reflects a lineage of modernist thinking informed by both academic and professional experience. Educated at SCI-Arc, he developed an early interest in architecture shaped by structure, landscape, and the careful control of natural light. His work today reflects those influences, balanced by the practical realities of building and the personal aspirations of clients.

Over time, the firm has become known for residences that balance openness and shelter, transparency and privacy, and simplicity with warmth. Materials are selected for their durability and authenticity; concrete, wood, stone, and glass; detailed to create a sense of quiet permanence.

Scott Hughes Architects has received more than thirty AIA Design Excellence awards, and the firm’s work has been recognized nationally for its contribution to contemporary residential architecture. Notable projects include Beach Road 2, recognized as one of the 100 most important Florida buildings of the last 100 years, and Ski House H2O, described by The Wall Street Journal as the “definitive modern Florida home.”

The practice remains intentionally focused, allowing for close involvement by Scott Hughes in every project. This hands-on approach ensures continuity from concept through construction and supports a collaborative design process with clients, consultants, and builders.

The firm’s work ultimately seeks to create architecture that is calm, enduring, and quietly expressive — houses shaped by light, grounded in landscape, and designed to support the lives lived within them.
